On August 21, 1957, at about 3:30 p. m., Edmund Dax was driving east on Highway 54, moving from Green Bay to Luxemburg; he
was traveling through the unincorporated village of Walhain, a settlement of dwellings, stores and taverns, spread out mostly
along the north side of the highway. At this time the appellant, Barbara Blahnik, eight years old, who was delivering evening newspapers, attempted to cross Highway
54 on her bicycle, moving in a southerly direction from the vicinity of the Conard tavern, located on the north side of the
highway, toward a driveway on the south side of the highway, leading to the home of one Cravillion.
